Berea’s Deep Green Residence Hall Garnering Attention
Tuesday, January 29, 2013
Excitement is building as construction continues on Berea College’s “Deep Green” residence hall, on target for LEED Platinum certification and Living Building Challenge Petal Recognition. The 121-bed residence hall is a model for sustainable student housing across the country, with features including a geothermal heating and cooling system, and a rooftop photovoltaic array.
Exemplifying Berea’s commitment to simple living and dignity in labor, students are designing and building the furnishings for the new residence hall. The wood is being harvested by mules from Berea’s 8,000-acre FSC Certified Forest.
The project has been featured lately in College Planning and Management and Green Building and Design, and construction progress is updated on the Deep Green Residence Hall’s Facebook page.
