Erik Kocher presents at SCUP Pacific Regional Conference

Erik Kocher presented “Communiversity – The Power of Sports & Athletics to Unite Campus and Community” at the Society for College and University Planning Pacific Regional conference on March 23. The presentation focused on the 196,000 SF, $91M Alaska Airlines Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Joining Erik in the presentation were:
- Chris Turletes, associate vice chancelor of facilities at the University of Alaska Anchorage
- Nick Thomas, design strategist at Downstream
- Michael Carlson, principal architect at McCool Carlson Green
The presentation focused on four specific aspects of the project:
- Evaluating strategies for how the university leveraged non-campus partners to support campus building efforts.
- Discovering how solving urban planning issues outside the boundaries of the campus was a catalyst for major campus development projects.
- Reviewing current innovations in campus athletic facilities that promoted student support and interaction.
- Exploring ideas that transformed campus athletic facilities into flexible community assets.
