James Madison University Recreation Center Expansion Opens

On the 20th anniversary of the opening of the original University Recreation Center (UREC), James Madison University celebrated the grand opening of the UREC expansion and renovation.  The new Hastings+Chivetta-designed center gives students much-needed space for recreation and an array of wellness activities, including a demonstration kitchen, massage room, a wellness assessment suite and  meditation room.  Other new amenities include a spinning room, TRX studio, and climbing and bouldering walls.  To accommodate increased demand, the weights, fitness and cardio spaces in the addition are 2.5 times larger than the old.  The large recreation pool is a significant feature, and includes a hydrotherapy room and a sauna.  It has allowed the University to offer new programs including Dive-in Movies, group training, and Battleship.  Gender-neutral restrooms/changing rooms are also included.
