Marshall University officially opened its doors to the new Arthur Weisberg Family Applied Engineering Complex to students at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday.

The new facility houses six academic and research programs, and includes one of only a handful of advanced materials testing laboratories in the country. The laboratory will be used to be state Division of Highways as a materials stress lab.

The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification, and includes sustainable features as a teaching tool throughout the space. A large green roof on the first floor allows students to study the ecological effects of stormwater and associated plantings. The collected stormwater will be used in research and teaching projects as well as recycled as graywater for the building’s plumbing.
