Featured Project: Saint Louis University Macelwane Hall Renovation
Wednesday, July 3, 2019
Hastings+Chivetta Architects designed the renovation of Saint Louis University’s (SLU’s) Macelwane Hall, an 82,770 SF project that was completed in December 2018. After a fire temporarily closed the facility, it underwent a comprehensive renovation of all floors.
The new design integrates with the context of the science precinct on campus and bridges SLU’s South and North campuses for increased research collaboration. The design fits within the University’s Campus Master Plan, which was also developed by Hastings+Chivetta.
The redesigned facility includes both lower- and upper-division teaching and research laboratories, as well as administration space. Programming studies of the existing building found an additional need for collaborative spaces, so the new design also includes areas for students to study and socialize together.
Progressing SLU’s campus sustainability efforts, Macelwane Hall’s redesign exceeds the City of St. Louis’ energy code requirements and includes many sustainable design and construction strategies.
