University of Dayton EPISCENTER featured in Green Building & Design Magazine
The Hastings+Chivetta-designed Electrical Power Integrated Systems Center (EPISCENTER) at the University of Dayton was featured in the September-October 2014 edition of Green Building & Design Magazine for its incorporation of a unique central plant that optimizes efficiency. The building is the first on the campus to achieve LEED certification. It also complies with General Electric’s Green Building Guidelines.
The facility is operated by GE’s Aviation Division and assists GE engineers in developing electrical power systems for aircraft ranging from private and commercial passenger planes to military jets and unmanned drones.
The four-story building houses 51,000 SF of offices and more than 91,000 SF of high-bay laboratory space. The mid-rise office structure and laboratories are linked by an enclosed walkway. Every detail of the building design is in line with GE branding and was subjected to a rigorous approval process. The design process was kept in strictest confidence to protect the innovation planned to occur in the building.
Hastings+Chivetta previously designed the 125,000 SF fitness and recreation complex at the university in 2006.
Construction is progressing smoothly for the GE Aviation EPISCENTER (Electrical Power Integrated Systems Research and Development Center) at the University of Dayton. Slated for completion this summer, the EPISCENTER is made possible through a partnership between the University of Dayton and GE Aviation to foster cutting-edge science and research for the aerospace industry. Identified as one of seven “Hubs of Innovation” by the Governor of Ohio, the Center will house state-of-the-art labs for GE Aviation researchers in partnership with University of Dayton students.
